Week 15: Toy Story 3 (2010)

61euyU4feZL

This is only my second, maybe third, time watching this movie. I have to say though – I thoroughly enjoy it!  It’s classic Disney magic with the epic Pixar animation that I love so much.  There are so many memorable scenes, from Hamm playing the harmonica while they’re all locked up in jail to Ken modelling his clothes for Barbie, the incredible special appearances by Mr. Tortilla Head and Spanish Buzz, to the final scenes where the toys all hold hands facing the fire at the dump, Andy’s mom says goodbye (just try not to bawl!) and Andy introduces Bonnie to the whole gang.

Plot Summary: The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it’s up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren’t abandoned and to return home. (www.imdb.com)

TOY STORY 3

Fun Facts (From www.imdb.com):

An early version of Lotso can be seen in Toy Story (1995) during the staff meeting. Woody asks if the toys “up on the shelf can hear” him, and we see a shot of a big, pinkish bear. John Lasseter wanted to use Lotso in the original Toy Story, but PIXAR had troubles getting the fur right.

For Big Baby’s one line for the entire movie (“Mama”), the crew had a lot of babies audition by recording them saying the line. The baby that was chosen was named Woody. In fact, the director joked that was the reason why they chose that baby.

By the time Toy Story 3 (2010) was made, Pixar animators had figured out how to animate things like water and fur. Although being able to realistically animate fur was originally a concern for Toy Story 3 (2010) animators, the real animation challenge was trying to animate the trash bags in the movie. Because trash bags have special properties such as how it reflects light, animators spent weeks trying to get the trash bags correct.

The first sequel to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar without any of its predecessors being nominated.

The first Pixar film to be released in IMAX theaters.

Want some coffee? It’s good for ya, but don’t drink too much or you’ll hafta….you’ll hafta…be right back!

F.A.O. my Schwartz!

Hey! No one takes my wife’s mouth except me.  Give it back, ya furry air freshener!

Sunnyside is a place of ruin and despair, ruled by an evil bear who smells of strawberries.

You’re not a toy. You’re an accessory. You’re a purse with legs.

You can’t hit each other! That’s my job!

I feel fresh, healthy. It’s terrible.

Yes, I’m back. Where have I been?

I’m going away now, but I need someone really special to play with them.

The thing that makes Woody special is he’ll never give up on you. Ever.

So long, partner.

Final Thoughts:

This almost beats Toy Story as my favourite movie of the franchise.  In 2018, we’ll get to see the story continue when Toy Story 4 comes to theaters. I can’t wait; can you?

Week 14: Toy Story 2 (1999)

toy_story_two

As I watched this movie this week, I was surprised to discover I hadn’t seen it in its entirety before. I’ve watched bits and pieces here and there many times when I’ve found it on TV, but this was the first time watching all the way through – including the hilarious bloopers that I discovered in the credits!  As I talked about planning to watch this for this week’s blog, a lot of people told me that this was their favourite movie in the entire Toy Story series – and I’ve got to say I’m kind of with them!  From Buster “keeping it casual” as he takes Woody out to the yard sale to the little dentist chair the Cleaner uses to fix Woody in and from Buzz smacking into a sliding glass door and the stolen baggage cart sitting in the street in front of Andy’s house at the end – it’s an excellent movie start to finish.  I’ll definitely watch it over and over from now on.

Plot Summary: When Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends vow to rescue him, but Woody finds the idea of immortality in a museum tempting.  (www.imdb.com)

Fun Facts ( From www.imdb.com):

When Andy is playing with Woody in the beginning of the movie, he uses “RC” via his remote to launch Buzz out of a box. RC’s remote was left on the road in the final chase scene of Toy Story 1 and was not recovered.

This is one of three Disney movies to win a Golden Globe for Best Picture. The other two are Beauty and the Beast (1991) and The Lion King (1994).

At one point, while the toys are at Al’s Toy Barn, Mr. Potato Head views Rex, chasing after the car, in a rearview side mirror, which parodies a scene in Jurassic Park (1993), when the T-Rex chases after the crew in a jeep. Additionally, the phrase made famous in Jurassic Park, “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear,” is also visible on the mirror of the car that the toys drive in the store.

When Jessie first meets Woody (Tom Hanks), she exclaims, “Sweet mother of Abraham Lincoln!” Abraham Lincoln’s mother was Nancy Hanks, a blood relative of Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks is a direct descendant of an uncle of Nancy Hanks.

When the toys are planning the rescue of Woody, Etch-a-Sketch shows a map to Al’s Toy Barn located at 1001 West Cutting Boulevard. This is the address of Pixar Animation Studios in Richmond, California.

Final Thoughts:

I’m so glad I chose this movie this week.  I was certain I’d watched the whole thing before, but I hadn’t, so it was a whole new experience for me and those bloopers at the end were just an excellent icing on the cake.  I’ll leave you with some words from Buzz Lightyear. “Somewhere in all that stuffing is a toy that taught me life is only worth living if you’re being loved by a kid.  And I just travelled all this way to save that toy because I believed him.”

Week 13: Toy Story (1995)

51RC8ZR6KBL

I have watched this movie at least twenty times.  I could watch it twenty more and never get tired of it.  As Disney’s first computer animated feature film, Toy Story far surpassed expectations and turned the world of animation on its head.  It comes in at #92 on IMDB’s top-rated movies and was nominated for three Oscars.  For me, it’s once again my childhood all wrapped in a much-loved VHS.  I was ten when this movie came out and we went to see it in theaters.  The Easter Bunny brought me it the following year and my brother and I watched it innumerable times since.  I seem to watch it at least once a year and it’s one of my go-to movies when I’m having a bad day or not feeling well.

Plot Summary: A cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman figure supplants him as top toy in a boy’s room.  (www.imdb.com)

Woody_Toy_Story

Fun Facts ( From www.imdb.com):

This was the first animated film in Oscar history to be nominated for a Best Screenplay Academy Award – Adapted or Original.

Billy Crystal was originally offered the chance to voice Buzz Lightyear, but declined. After seeing the finished film, he said the decision was the biggest mistake of his career. Upon learning this, John Lasseter telephoned Billy’s house to offer him the role of Mike Wazowski in Monsters, Inc. (2001). Billy’s wife answered the telephone and said “John Lasseter wants to speak to you.” Billy took the telephone from his wife and said “Yes”.

What attracted Tom Hanks to the role of Woody was the fact that, during his childhood, he would always wonder if his toys were alive and moved around when nobody was in his room. What attracted Tim Allen to the role of Buzz Lightyear was the fact that, before him, they offered the role to his biggest influence in his career, Chevy Chase, who turned it down.

When the Pizza Planet delivery boy enters the Dinoco gas station, he asks for directions to West Cutting Boulevard. West Cutting Boulevard is the street where Pixar Animation Studios was located in Richmond, California, at the time (Pixar moved its entire operation to Emeryville, California, in 2000).

Sometimes things don’t turn out how we think they will. Sometimes we make mistakes and no one else will let us live them down.  But, if you stop and think, come up with a good plan and have friends you can count on, you can get yourself out of any situation – even Sid’s house!  And, when things get really bad, just remember this: “You’re my favourite deputy.”

Week 12: Hercules (1997)

51X2JFGT4NL

This is one of my top ten favourite Disney movies. It’s my childhood contained on a well-loved VHS.  Meg is one of my all-time favourite female Disney characters – she has this sassy sarcasm I just can’t get enough of.  She’s not your typical damsel in distress – that much is for sure.  It also contains one of my favourite Disney songs – Zero to Hero.  It’s one of the few songs I can actually sing word for word and I can’t get enough of it.

Plot Summary: The son of the Greek Gods Zeus and Hera is stripped of his immortality as an infant and must become a true hero in order to reclaim it. (www.imdb.com)

Hercules039.jpg

 Fun Facts (from www.imdb.com):

During “Zero to Hero” they show Hercules and Pegasus making concrete handprints. There are multiple complete handprints around them including Achilles and Aphrodite. Each block also references a “Sid”. This is Sid Grauman, the creator of the Chinese Theater that showcases celebrity handprints in real life.

Phil cleans himself up using a lion’s skin. The skin once belonged to Scar from The Lion King (1994).

Leaving aside the ‘Pastoral’ segment of Fantasia (1940), this was the first Disney animated feature to be completely inspired by mythology rather than a fairy tale.

Week 11: Up (2009)

ImageMy husband and I first saw this movie when it was out in theaters. I remember very well running into acquaintances of ours who had brought their granddaughter to the movie. She said to us, “Why are you guys here to see a kids’ movie?” hahaha. She did not know me. If I have a chance to see the latest animated blockbuster in a theater, I’m there, sister! I love this movie. The love story without words at the beginning gets me every time. I love grumpy old Carl Fredericksen, slightly annoying Russell, and, especially, faithful, loveable Dug. What a great movie!

Plot Summary: By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years younger, inadvertently becomes a stowaway. (www.imdb.com)

Image

Fun Fact: When the house first rises, breaking free of its foundation, the front porch is clearly empty. Yet Russell appears later in the far right corner. This is explained by Russell later when he says he crawled under the porch chasing a “snipe”. Apparently he hung on to something underneath the porch and crawled up later. In the short film George & A.J. it is revealed that Russell braced himself underneath Carl’s house when it took off in the same way that Woody held onto Sid’s milk crate when Sid picked it up in Toy Story. However, in the Up movie several shots show the complete underside of the house as it flies off and Russell is clearly not there (or on the porch). (www.imdb.com)

Favourite Character: Dug

Favourite Song:

The song that plays during the Love Story Montage. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLprjxFhs8s)

Quotable Quotes:

I am about to show you something I’ve never shown to anyone in my life. Ever.

South America. It’s like America, but South.

So long, fellas! I’ll send you a postcard from Paradise Falls.

“Kevin?” “Yeah! That’s his name I just gave him.”

My name is Dug. I have just met you and I love you!

What’s Dug doing? Why’s he with that small mailman?

I do ever so want the ball!

You lost it! Why do I not have a surprised feeling?

He has lost the bird. Put him in the cone of shame.

Ha! It’s funny ‘cause the squirrel gets dead.

It might sound boring. But I think the boring stuff is the stuff I remember most.

I was hiding under your porch because I love you. Can I stay?

“I wanna help!” “I don’t want your help! I want you safe!”

For assisting the elderly and performing above and beyond the call of duty, I would like to give you the greatest honour I can bestow – the Ellie badge.

Image

Final Thoughts:

Friendship can warm up even the coldest, grumpiest heart. When Carl lost Ellie, he shut himself off from his dreams, his passions, the world, and friendship. Russell, Kevin, and Dug help to thaw his heart and bring out his begrudgingly caring side. So many times, when things go wrong in life, we shut ourselves up, dwell on what’s been lost or taken from us, and don’t notice all the good things that might be right in front of us right now.

Week 10: THE TOP TEN

ImageIn case you haven’t already noticed, I am in love with all things Disney. I grew up in the 90’s (mostly), so much of my list is Disney movies from that generation – if a movie didn’t make the list, it doesn’t mean I don’t love it – trust me, if I listed ALL the Disney movies I love, it would pretty much just be a list of ALL the Disney movies. It’s taken me awhile to work on this post because – hello! – how do you choose? I mean, really. By the way, these are in no particular order – I cannot decide which is my top favourite. Without further ado, here we go:

Image1. Aladdin. Between the flying carpet escape and Aladdin trying to elude the guards in the marketplace, this movie is pure magic.

Image2. Pocahontas. Wingapo and welcome to the list. Would you like me to start singing Colours of the Wind? Because I definitely could.

Image3. Mulan. I’ve already explained why Mulan is special to me – but regardless of the personal connection, it’s an awesome movie with a great soundtrack.

Image4. Up. Because, if you don’t cry watching this movie, you are OBVIOUSLY dead inside.

Image5. Lion King. Hakuna Matata. That is all.

ImageImage

6. The Rescuers and The Rescuers: Down Under. I am fairly certain this is what my pet rats do in their spare time. Just sayin’.

Image7. Little Mermaid. Another one where you can just sing your way through the whole movie. Honourable mention goes to the half-hour VHS spin-offs that my brother and I watched over and over.

Image8. Beauty and the Beast. Be our guest, be our guest!

Image9. Hunchback of Notre Dame. This one makes me cry every time. What a story!

Image10. Hercules. Because Meg is sassy and sarcastic and that makes me love her.

Honourable mentions go to more recent Disney movies I’ve fallen in love with: Wreck It Ralph, Tangled, Brave, and Frozen.

Other honourable mentions include: The Fox and the Hound, The Aristocats, The Lady and the Tramp, The Jungle Book and Bambi.

When I asked on Facebook about my friends’ favourite Disney movies, I got a ton of different answers. Do you know how hard it is to choose a favourite? (I do!)

Here are some of the responses: The Lion King, Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, The Rescuers, Aladdin, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Alice in Wonderland, Aristocats, Pete’s Dragon, Heavyweights, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella, Mulan, and Pocahontas.

My friend, Troy, shared his top ten list with me and I’m sharing it with you:

1. Finding Nemo
2. Dumbo
3. Toy Story
4. Wreck-It Ralph
5. Ratatouille
6. Lion King
7. Lady and the Tramp
8. Wall-E
9. Beauty and the Beast
10. Pinocchio

(Troy blogs over at http://thisweeksmovie.wordpress.com/ . Pop over and say hello!)

I also asked on Facebook what people’s favourite Disney soundtrack, villain and hero were. There were lots of different answers! Mine are Pocohontas, Ursula and Mulan. Soundtracks people loved included: Aladdin, Frozen, Lion King, Little Mermaid, and Narnia. Villains included: Ursula, Gaston, Scar, Kaa, Mother Gothel, and Elsa. Favourite heroes included: Robin Hood, Merida, Mulan, Belle, Olaf, and Li Shang.

I hope you enjoyed my list! Why don’t you share yours in the comments? Can’t get enough Disney…

Week 9: Lady and the Tramp (1955)

Image

This is one of my favourite Disney movies. Every single time I see a Siamese cat, I start to hum, “We are Siamese if you please.” My favourite scene in the entire movie is the spaghetti eating scene – I mean, seriously.

Plot Summary: The romantic tale of a sheltered uptown Cocker Spaniel dog and a streetwise downtown Mutt. (www.imdb.com)

Image

Fun Fact: After ”We are Siamese”, when Lady is chasing the two cats, the cats knock down bluish coloured curtains which tangle up Lady. After Aunt Sarah comes into the room, Lady is tangled up in red curtains. (www.imdb.com)

Favourite Song:

Next Week’s Movie: Next week I share my Top Ten with you. What’s on your top ten list of Disney movies?

Week 8: Princess and the Frog (2009)

Image

This was the first time watching this particular Disney movie. I looked at the DVD case, which said, “The Best Disney Movie Since The Lion King”. I couldn’t believe that this would be true. Now, while I wouldn’t necessarily go that far, I did absolutely love this movie. It’s so fun and the New Orleans accents cracked me right up. Hey, it might even crack my top ten. Speaking of which – that will be the focus of my tenth post. So tell me in the comments what your favourite Disney movie(s) is/are and why!

Plot Summary: A fairy tale set in Jazz Age-era New Orleans and centered on a young woman named Tiana and her fateful kiss with a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again. (www.imdb.com)

Image

Fun Fact: The Prince of Maldonia is called Naveen. Naveen is an Indian name (meaning “new”), which suggests that Maldonia is a Eurasian country (the name of Maldonia is a mix between Malta and Macedonia). During the “Down in New Orleans” montage, the newspaper mentions in print that Maldonia cannot be found on the map; i.e. it is made up for the movie. (www.imdb.com)

Quotable Quotes:

No way in this whole world I would ever, ever, I mean never! Kiss a frog!

I’ve been looking for you everywhere. What a coincidence! I’ve been avoiding you everywhere.

I swear I’m sweatin’ like a sinner in church!

I was beginning to think wishin’ on stars was just for babies and crazy people.

No, no, no! There is no way I’m kissin’ a frog and eatin’ a bug on the same day!

I think I just chipped my favourite tooth.

Your breath darn near killed me to death.

Don’t make me light my butt!

My daddy never did get what he wanted, but he had what he needed.

My dream wouldn’t be true without you in it.

Image

Final Thoughts:

This is truly a story where you find that appearances just don’t matter. Eventually, they just give up on ever becoming human again and just become okay with the idea of being frogs as long as they can be together. It’s when they just give up and give in that their dream finally comes true. It’s a sweet romantic story and I loved it.

Week 7: Mulan (1998)

Image

Mulan has always been a special Disney movie to me. In 1997, my younger brother was granted his wish by The Children’s Wish Foundation and we traveled as a family to Disney World. During one of our tours there, we toured the animation studios. The movie they were working on at the time was Mulan and I was able to see how the drawings of Mushu would be put together to make him move. I loved it and was fascinated by it – it was so difficult waiting over a year before the movie came out in theaters! Put this personal connection together with my fascination with Asia and Asian history and Mulan is way up there on my list of favourite Disney movies.

Plot Summary: To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China’s greatest heroines in the process. (www.imdb.com)

Image

Fun Fact: This was the first full length movie animated only at the Florida animation studio. (www.imdb.com)

Favourite Character: Mulan. Mushu is one of my very favourite animal sidekicks, too.

Dishonour on your whole family! Dishonour on you! Dishonour on your cow!

Oh! I think my bunny slippers just ran for cover.

There’s a couple things I KNOW they’re bound to notice!

I knew we could do it. You the man! Well, sorta.

We started this thing together and that’s how we’ll finish it. Promise.

Let’s go kick some Hunny buns!

No matter how the wind howls, the mountain cannot bow to it.

The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.

You don’t meet a girl like that every dynasty.

Week 6: Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998)

Image

*Spoiler Alert!* Who knew John Smith would somehow turn out to be a pompous jerk? Who knew Pocahontas wouldn’t end up with him??? I loved their love story in the first movie…so sweet and romantic. In this movie, I was glad he got his own ship and took off and that she ended up with someone else. The short moment that John Smith and Pocahontas get back together in this movie made me a bit upset because I’d already fallen in love with John Rolf and written Smith off as dead.

Plot Summary: Pocahontas sets off on a journey to England with Meeko, Flit, and Percy. Hearing rumors of John Smith’s death, Pocahontas tries to prevent war and battle. (www.imdb.com)

Image

Fun Fact: Most of the bear sounds are real, but one loud sound during the “bear baiting” sequence was actually an elephant. (www.imdb.com)

Favourite Character: Pocahontas. Also, a huge fan of her bodyguard.

 Favourite Song:

 Quotable Quotes:

Treason?!? You must be looking for Radcliffe!

“I beg your pardon.” “Well, you have it!”

You will always be with me.

There are many voices around you, but you must listen to your own voice.

We walked the same path once, but I have found where I belong.

I have duty to honour what is in my heart.

 Final Thoughts:

Maybe you’ve walked the same path with someone for a while and then drifted apart. Remember that we each have our own path to take and we must listen to our own heart, our own voice, to determine our own path. When you find where you belong, you will know.
